Early Life and Education
The young man named Kunal Kamra was born and raise in Mumbai. Being a Sindhi, it is evident that his childhood and adolescence were spent in the vibrant city of Mumbai. He completed his school and got admission to Jai Hind College, Mumbai, to pursue a bachelor’s degree in commerce. Like all other students, he enrolled for the regular classes with great expectations. However, he could not continue his studies for long. After appearing for the first-year examination, it occurred to him that college life was not meant for him. Without a college education, Kunal began to work with an ad film production house named Corcoise Films owned by renowned director Prasoon Pandey. He joined as a production assistant and looked after the organisational needs of the crew. It may be mentioned that working with Corcoise was a new experience for Kunal. Assisting the ad film director offered him an inside view of the mechanism of the film and ad industry.
He worked with the organisation for about eleven years and acquired immense experience. It is this experience that empowers him to make his own shows. Career
Kunal Kamra is an Indian stand-up comedian and talk-show host who gained popularity due to his comedic and satirical performances. He started his professional comedy career in 2013, when he first performed at the Canvas Laugh Club in Mumbai. At the early stages of his career, Kamra performed jokes of an observational nature, which depicted the idiosyncrasies of the bachelor life, taxi drivers, television commercials, and other everyday occurrences. He quickly gained recognition for his ability to relate to his audience on a personal level.
However, Kamra’s YouTube channel, where he posted some of his performances, eventually earned him both critical acclaim and controversy. His jokes frequently focused on current political and societal issues, making him a target for political criticism. In particular, a YouTube video of his, released in 2017 and tackling Indian hyper-nationalism, resulted in death threats against him. As such, Kamra became a figure of both comedic and political controversy.

Outside of his professional comedy career, Kamra’s boisterous personality got him into legal issues. In 2018, he claimed on social media that his landlord had asked him to leave due to “political issues.” Currently, Kamra is a well-known figure in the Indian comedy scene, being both a satirical comedian and actor.
Shut Up Ya Kunal
In 2017, Kunal launched a YouTube podcast Shut Up Ya Kunal with his friend Ramit Verma. Kamra can be seen in the videos holding informal conversations with politicians and activists from both ends of the spectrum. The shows are punctuated with news clips of the guests backtracking their statements for comic effect. Ramit Verma of the satirical Facebook page Peeing Human is the creative director and editor of the show. The first episode was recorded on 20 July 2017, and it featured Madhukeshwar Desai, the vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s youth wing.

Morphed Video of Child Singing for Prime Minister Modi
In May 2022, Indian comedian Kunal Kamra got himself into trouble after sharing an edited video of a seven-year-old boy who has sung a patriotic song while meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Germany. The original video captured the boy reciting Hey Janmabhoomi Bharat in front of Modi in Berlin. Kamra shared an edited version of it, in which the chorus that was present in the first version was replaced by Mehngayi Daayan — a song about soaring prices that appeared in Peepli Live.
The altered version of the video picked up immense traction on social media. The boy’s father, Ganesh Pol, complained about the post and argued that his son must not be made a part of politics. Pol claimed that his son’s video was manipulated and questioned the use of the child’s image. Kamra replied that the joke was not meant for the child and clarified that the video had already appeared on a news channel. The comedian added that he had shared it again with a different audio.
However, the issues did not end there. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) took notice of the claims and wrote to Twitter and Delhi Police to take action against the post. The child rights body expressed its concerns over the use of a minor in a political post and demanded the removal of the video.
Kamra removed the video from Twitter after the intervention. However, in May 2022, the NCPCR summoned a Twitter India representative after the company claimed that it had no action taken report in response to their letter.
Kamra’s latest controversy reflects the kind of fame and the kind of troubles that he has faced because of his comedy and criticism of the government. The incident also sparked a debate over comedy, politics, altered videos, and the use of children in social media posts.

Incident on IndiGo flight
In January 2020, comedian Kunal Kamra was involved in a controversy after he confronted television journalist Arnab Goswami on an IndiGo flight. He questioned him about his coverage of national issues and his reports on the death of Rohith Vemula. He posted a short video of the conversation on social media. In the video, Arnab Goswami remains silent throughout most of the conversation. The incident went viral on social media and the news outlets the next day.
The airline company, IndiGo, announced a six-month travel ban on Kunal Kamra the next day. Other airlines, including SpiceJet and GoAir, issued indefinite bans to the comedian. However, the controversy continued as people questioned the legality of the airline’s action and the rules they followed to blacklist the comedian.
Many celebrities and passengers expressed their views on the incident. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap announced that he would not board IndiGo planes after the airline’s treatment of Kamra. Moreover, some passengers even protested on-board against the comedian.
Later, Kamra’s counsel sent a legal notice to IndiGo. They requested for cancellation of six-month travel ban, an official apology, and a compensation worth Rs.25 lakh in the legal notice. They argued that the airline did not follow the necessary procedure to restrict the comedian from travelling aboard.
Another controversy occurred in Kamra’s life in September 2022. His comedy shows in Gurugram were cancelled when Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal objected to his performances. VHP reportedly approached the local administration to cancel the shows after finding his jokes and remarks ‘defamatory’.
After his shows were cancelled, Kamra reacted to the development by sending an open letter to VHP. It was seen in the letter that he invited the organisation to criticise Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.
Accusations of Contempt of Court
In November 2020, comedian Kunal Kamra was summoned to appear before the court for contempt for his tweets in response to the order for interim bail to journalist Arnab Goswami by the Supreme Court. A number of people have approached the court, arguing that Kamra’s tweets were contemptuous. Attorney General K. K. Venugopal also approved the required contempt action. Kamra defended his comments saying that he felt that decisions of the Supreme Court on matters of personal liberty should be subject to criticism and that he would not retract or apologise. The case stirred up controversy over freedom of expression, critiques on the judiciary, and the limits of expression.
Accusation of Defamation
In 2025, Indian comedian Kunal Kamra got involved in a prominent controversy that started with a satirical performance, which was interpreted as a mockery of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The comedian’s performance was uploaded on a social media platform in the form of a video on 19 th March 2025. The clip contained a parody song and jokes about the politician. However, Kamra did not mention the leader directly; instead, the Shiv Sena supporters claimed that he was the target of the comedy, and the jokes were about the ‘2022 Shiv Sena split.’
The clip, which involved an energetic parody of a famous song and performance, went viral after being posted on the social media channel. Shiv Sena workers went to Mumbai’s Khar district and vandalized the Habitat Studio, where the comedian had staged the performance. The police arrested twelve people in the line of duty and later released them on bail. This incident became the latest twist in the long-running drama that has been attracting public attention.
A criminal case was filed against Kamra by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel; a zero FIR was registered under sections 353(1)(b), 353(2), and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for mischief in public and defaming the Shiv Sena chief. The comedian was called by Mumbai Police to give statements in the FIR. It was also reported that Kamra was threatened after his performance. The comedian did not apologize to Patel for his outburst but defended himself and his performance.
As the FIR proceeded, Kamra moved to the Madras High Court as he was residing in Tamil Nadu. On 28 th March 2025, the comedian got an interim anticipatory bail that was extended until 7 th April. The bail was extended again as the FIR proceedings continued.
However, on the 29 th of March 2025, reports indicated that three more FIRs had been registered against Kamra from various parts of Maharashtra concerning the same comments. These complaints were transferred to Khar Police.
The case also landed in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. There was a breach of privilege motion against Kamra concerning the comments, and the matter was before the Privileges Committee. In 2026, Kamra appeared before the committee as the proceedings dragged on. This incident further fueled the fiery debate that has been occurring regarding the comedian’s satire and freedom of expression.
In February 2026, with senior counsel Haresh Jagtiani, Kamra moved to the Bombay High Court to challenge the Sahyog portal and some changes to the Information Technology Rules. The petitioner argued that the amended rules could allow authorities to censor digital content freely. The comedian’s move to court once again drew even more attention to the controversies surrounding the case.

CJP Protests
In July 2026, comedian Kunal Kamra got embroiled in yet another controversy after addressing a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The protest was called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over the irregularities in the NEET-UG exam and other issues related to education. The comedian, who reached the protest spot on July 15, is said to have addressed the demonstrators and expressed his solidarity with the protesters.
During his speech, Kamra made a satirical and political remark about Sita’s husband and Nita’s husband, referring to Lord Ram and business magnate Mukesh Ambani. His comment, which reportedly came in the form of satire at the central government’s expense, went viral after being filmed and uploaded on social media.
The remark appears to have resulted in a legal dispute. Advocate Amita Sachdeva, who sent a legal notice to Kamra, alleged that his comments were an offence to Hindu religious sentiments. As per the reports about the notice, she demanded that the comedian take down the video of the remarks, issue a public apology, and give a written undertaking in the event that he repeats such comments.
The controversy, which added another chapter to Kamra’s career-long history of political satire, appears to have involved accusations of sacrilege. While the comedian is renowned for his cutting critiques of politicians and criticism of the government, the criticism of Ambani and Hindu religious traditions has resulted in a legal dispute.
